To To

To To
Cuisine: Vietnamese
Address: 875 Albany Hwy, East Victoria Park, WA

I’ve eaten here many times over the past few years and have always loved their food. The restaurant is usually busy on the weekends, so make sure to book.

Service is quick, often abit too quick that it makes us feel like they are rushing us out the door to allow the next set of patrons in… Food comes out quite quickly too, but is always well cooked and more importantly it always tastes good!

In the past I have thought of their service as similar to your average Chinese restaurant or Hawker place. This time around though, they were passing off a chendol drink with no chendol – no notice or offer to exchange it, we had to request it be sent back to the kitchen and replaced with a different drink. I don’t know abt running a restaurant, but logic tells me you can’t serve an item if vital ingredients are missing!

Other that that mishap, every other time I’ve been to To To hasn’t been a problem. The menu is quite extensive but I almost always order Pho. I once tried their Pork Chop on Broken Rice but I think I still prefer Tra Vinh’s version of the dish. I would definitely prefer To To over Tra Vinh or Viet Hao any day though!

Halo

Halo - www.halorestaurant.com.au
Cuisine: Modern Australian
Address: Pier One, Barrack St Jetty, Perth, WA 6000

Went to Halo for the first time for a special occasion. The restaurant itself wasn’t busy as it was a weekday night, and we were seated pier-side near the corner… good for a partial view of the city and Riverside Drive. The food itself was great, it reminded me of Amuse’s style of challenging my palate. The waiters were friendly though difficult to flag down, I’m not sure if it was partially because of our table position making it difficult for them to see?

Our Menu
Dozen oysters natural with lemon – 42
Chargrilled prawns, seaweek meringue, crab mousse, water spinach, lime – 24
Pork hock terrine, parma ham, crackling, wasabi, frizee – 19
Spinach and ricotta strudel, ratatouille chutney, cepe mushrooms, sunflower duccah – 32
300g black angus sirloin served medium, broccolini, sauce bearnaise, sauteed potato – 46
Oven roasted chat potatoes, lemon thyme – 10

I didn’t check the time but the time between each course was significantly slow considering the half empty restaurant. R had ordered a dozen natural oysters and requested it on ice, however it was presented to us on salt. When we questioned it, the manager said that they had never used ice and they did not have the ice chips to do so. Fair enough. But they should have notified us that they couldn’t meet our request and we would have cancelled the dish, alas half a dozen oysters died for no reason.

Even leaving the restaurant was slow! It took a while to flag down staff, it took more time to get the bill, and even more time to pay it. On the up side, they didn’t charge us for the 2 bottles of sparkling water…. possibly because we requested new glasses when we found little insects in them.

Overall good food and poor to fair service has left me generally with a bad impression. I’m unlikely to want to go back, especially with all the other great restaurants around Perth!

Yuki

Yuki Japanese Restaurant
Cuisine: Japanese
Address: Shop 15, 113 Collins Rd Willetton 6955

Yuki is right in the corner of the cluster of shops on Collins Rd, Willetton. They are located very conveniently off Roe highway and close to where we live (which is why we visit so often). It’s well established, I even remember going to the restaurant when I was still in high school (10+ years). I’m not sure if they changed management during the time, but the food has always been consistently good… perhaps even better now that I’ve experienced various Japanese restaurants locally as well as internationally.

We almost always get the Bento Set and Udon which never receive any complaints, their sushi aren’t too bad either – quite a delicious size. The service is always friendly and efficient, the food comes out quite quickly.  Of course you can’t compare it to Ha-Lu in Mount Hawthorn, Ha-Lu is high end Japanese experience where Yuki is more of a casual dining experience.

Cantina 663

Octopus, Prawn, Oyster

We went to Cantina on a hot and muggy night in January. There was too much hype from friends and reviews read, so my expectations were higher than the norm. You really can’t compare it to the typical fancy restaurants because it’s quite… unique.

But taking everything into consideration, the Cantina experience I had was ok. I’m not that fussed about the decore since we were out doors. Generally, the seats would have been fine… but on a hot muggy evening, we all felt much more comfortable standing.

Black RisottoThe food itself was quite interesting. I had the Black Risotto with Cuttlefish, I thought it would be similar to Modo Mio’s Black Ink Pasta… I thought wrong. The risotto was ok, would have be better if cooked a tad longer and had less salt, more flavour. I didn’t see or taste the lemon aioli or dill salsa in the dish which was stated on the menu….

From what I’ve been told, the lambchops were pretty good. Ideally it would have been nicer with a different cut, and steak knives shouldnt have needed to be requested. The beef cheek was nice, almost like those meats which have sat in the slow cooker all day. The dish would have been welcomed during winter, but alas it was begrudgingly eaten whilst we shifted uncomfortably in our seats and our clothes clung to our skin….

Despite the disappointing experience, the service was really up to standard and I’m willing to give Cantina another shot…. just not with their current dinner menu, and when the weather is a lot cooler.

Christmas Dadong Roast Duck

image

image

I celebrated Christmas in Beijing eating the popular Dadong roast duck! And I can understand why this duck is so deliciously popular =Pp~

It had so many mouthwatering menu items that makes me want to eat at the restaurant everyday!

There are multiple Dadong restaurants in Beijing, but the one we went to was in Jinbao Shopping Center, 2 minutes walking distance from our hotel ^_^

I’ll post the video of our attendant cooking the wagyu beef when I get around to it.
