Wudaokou – BLCU Area Map

I decided to point out some of the key places in and around Wudaokou – BLCU area. This is a “cheatsheet” to places which I regularly went to around the Wudaokou – BLCU area. They’re the typical places which you would discover yourself given time, but I would have loved it if someone told me about these places earlier!

Note: a lot of shops closed down and a lot of new ones opened up so not everything might be applicable.

Shopping in Wudaokou – BLCU

Lotus Center

Directions: Walk down Chengfulu towards Wudaokou, it’s opposite Maccas (McDonald). Large supermarket/shopping center.

Wudaokou Clothing Market

Directions: Walk east, past China Post and the Chaoshifa to the junction of Chengfulu and Xueyuanlu traffic lights (where macca’s is). Walk south and cross at the overpass and continue down until you reach a stretch of little food shalls and a dodgy looking building.

Buying DVDs

If you’re sick of CCTV, you can get your hands on a lot of foreign movies and series for cheap.

Location:

  • There’s a deli/store set up next to the BLCU canteen, it’s at the base of the stairs which lead up to the food court and restaurant area. They sell a other knick knacks and snacks as well.
  • XiJiao Hotel Recreation building on the top floor has good quality DVDs for a couple of kuai more. Their series can go to about 160RMB or more.
  • Street Vendors also have a box or bag of DVDs, usually found around subway stations or street markets

Price: I forget exactly how much it costs, I think a single DVD is 5-8RMB and a series is about 15-20RMB. Longer series / box sets costs much more, around 160RMB and more (depending on how many dvds there are).

Quality: The DVD quality from the guys at the stairs range from ‘camera in cinema’ quality to dvd-rips. The shop at XiJiao Hotel is very good quality dvd-rip, but a few might be tv-sync.

Refund/Exchange: If the dvd doesn’t work, I take it back to the shop and exchange it. I never refunded them, and I doubt it’s possible.

I found the ones in Dalian slightly cheaper and had better quality than the ones I found in Beijing.

Eating on BLCU Campus

Canteen

Found next to the BLCU Bookstore, the Canteen takes up the ground floor of the building where all the students flock to during lunchtimes. The canteen only opens during certain times of the day, generally during meal times.

You can only purchase food here with a card which you have to buy (sorry I forget where you buy it from), and this card can be used upstairs as well. I didn’t really check if it’s true, but I’ve been told that it’s cheaper (by a few kuai) to eat downstairs…

Just remember that you pay for the items which you want instead of a once off payment. Generally 2 items and a block of rice (yes, it really is a block) is enough.

Food Court, Japanese, Chinese, Korean Restaurant and Cafe

I don’t know if there’s actually a name for this place, but it’s located upstairs of the Canteen. This is probably where most of the international students eat.

There’s a pretty nice Japanese Restaurant upstairs of the little deli which sells dvds. It’s across from the cafe and there a Chinese ‘Restaurant’ next to the Japanese Restaurant and Cafe and between this Chinese ‘Restaurant’ and the Canteen is a Korean Restaurant.

Muslim Restaurant

Don’t actually know the names of these places, but the Muslim Restaurant is joined to the Canteen building found closer to the Basketball courts. Everyone loves this place and the food here is great, you can’t go wrong with the meat sticks and bread.

But note that sometimes there’s more fat/tendon/cartilage than meat, bring tissues. Oh yeah, the bowls are for you to drink from.

Lush/Pyro

Upstairs the bookstore on the corner of Chengfulu at the traffic lights, opposite KFC. American owned, hangout. Very similar to Pyro.

Pancake stalls

These can be found everywhere throughout Beijing. It’s a delicious meal on the go, especially in winter, and costs only a few kuai. It’ll cost more if you want to add stuff to it, or if you’re in a tourist hotspot.

How to Scare a Patient

whistleI accidentally discovered a [no so] great method on how to scare the crap out of a kid in the dental chair, and very possibly scar them for life to the point that they refuse to return until they have pus pouring out of the multiple abscesses they have!

The ingredients needed for this concoction is:

  • 1x patient. Preferably around 6 years of age. This is the ideal age because they’re unlikely to have had any hardcore dental work done before [unless they're the type to suck on lollies 24/7], won’t know what to expect, and they are also old enough to remember the dreaded experience.
  • 1x dentist/therapist/hygienist. For ideal conditions, make sure they are running behind and pressed for time, which will hopefully cause them to rush through the procedure without fully explaining and buttering up the patient.
  • A nurse/assistant. Or preferably not, since not having one will make things a lot more difficult. In this case I had an inexperienced assistant… I guess it partially counts?
  • 1x set up…. er duh!?

Method:

  1. deviousStart as per usual, inviting the patient into the room and into the dental chair. It may be good to still be in the process of setting up as it will make lots of noises, and allows the patient to see all the instruments and imagine the worst-case scenario. Note: Be sure to use the gel etch and fissure sealant in syringe with the tips looking awfully sinister.
  2. The dentist/therapist/hygienist needs to talk as little as possible. The aim is to make the whole experience as cold and sterile as possible. No smiles allowed.
  3. Begin procedure as per usual. Be sure the wave the handpiece around the patients face.
  4. ninjaWhen etching and applying sealant, move fast, silently and directly so to make the poor kid jump in surprise thinking they’re getting jabbed by a needle.
  5. Finish up as per usual. Be sure to be as mean as possible by ignoring the patient’s tears and kicking them out the door pronto~!

hrmm… alright, so that wasn’t exactly how things actually turned out. Step 4 however is inspired by what happened when I was doing a fissure seal on a little patient of mine. She was so good as well… and I had to apologise multiple times because I felt terrible for scaring the crap out of her.

bakaHow did it happen? Well… I was completely in my own zone that I didn’t even realise how scared she was until she gasped out loud when I first applied the etch. When in the zone, a set of teeth is just another set of teeth, I forgot that this particular set of teeth was actually attached to a patient who has never had a sealant.

sigh-glass Thankfully the little patient was super-mature about the whole scarred for life process and forgave me just a little bit…. I can only imagine what she really thought of me….

Mouthwash Causes Cancer?

I’ve had quite a number of patients mentioning story the media has been running recently, it’s about a study published in the Dental Journal of Australia which found ‘significant evidence’ that: alcohol-containing mouthwashes contribute to the increased risk of development of oral cancer.

hrmm, I found it interesting that Flap found some older studies which did NOT find any correlation between mouthwash and oral cancer. I found it even more interesting to have a letter sent to me reassuring me that alcohol-based mouthwash is safe. Bad news sure does travel fast!

Anyway.

My best answer to my patients?

BRUSH AND FLOSS!

Regardless of whether they use alcoholic, non-alcoholic, organic, none, or whatever. I would still rather have my patients brushing and flossing like they’re supposed to. Why talk and worry about mouthwash when you haven’t even got the basic habits down pat?

Not only that, I don’t actually know anyone who recommends mouthwash for anything other than perio and dry mouth… (I feel like I’ve just jinxed myself)

I only wonder how this will impact on Listerine? This publicity will definitely put a dent in their sales regardless of how “significant” the evidence really is. I bet they’re going to be changing their marketing stance, say bye bye to the big *kabOOm* finally! (I never liked those ads anyway)

Taking Time-Off

The thing with working, not only in dental but other fields too, is getting the time-off! Lucky for me I can pretty much pick and choose when I want to take time-off so long as I let the clinic know before hand. Unlucky for me, whenever the clinic closes I’m out of work.

But generally I’m pretty lucky, my friends have booked their time-off up to a year in advance! In contrast, I block my time-off about 6 months in advance. I guess it’s because I don’t have to fight amongst colleagues to get time-off, if I don’t work then there’s no patient to book. yay yAy!

So anyway, I had already blocked out some time in July – August, but due to changes in circumstances I now have the flexibility to move this around. I had planned on flying to the Eastern states to have a look-see around Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, and even check out employment opportunities. I mean after spending ~85% of my life living in Australia, I would have liked to say I’ve been to the other states!

Well it’s not my fault that it’s cheaper to fly overseas rather than interstate!!

I’ve been “busying” myself looking at places to go and things to see, checking out accommodation and flights. sushiI think I’ve caught the travel-bug off my 姐 and 姐夫 who’s going to Japan  in a few weeks!

Dental Device Measures Teeth

Here’s one of many interesting articles I found from Modern Mechanix, this dental device almost looks like a torture device~ Not surprised so many people still fear going to the dentist

Aren’t we all glad that Dental technology has advanced so far? Nowadays we just fill our mouths up with putty and take an impression of our teeth, yaY! Although there’s still downsides to having impression material in your mouth, two points.

  • It has the potential to be messy! messy! messy! (especially when the patient upchucks in the chair )
  • Gaggers worst nightmare! They might even prefer to use this monstrous dental device instead O_o

Device Takes Measure of the Teeth
Dental Device Measures Teeth
WITH the aid of the “gnathograph,” an instrument as mouth-filling as its name, a dentist’s patients may now be assured of a perfect fit for artificial teeth.

Fitted to the jaws as shown above, the new device registers the arrangement of the teeth and the direction of the “bite,” to guide the dentist in straightening teeth or fitting inlays, crowns, bridges, and plates.

Its inventor, Dr. Beverly B. McCollum of Los Angeles, Calif., demonstrates in the picture at the right [image edited] how the instrument is then mounted for use in tooling a plate to just the right shape to give the most comfortable fit in the mouth.

Chinese Characters in WordPress 2.7

Every single time I have to upgrade WordPress, it messes with my Chinese characters! The characters (be it Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Malay, Thai etc) show up as question marks ??? or funny symbols 所‘. It’s not too much of a difference to me since 99% of my posts are in English, but it still bugs me if I don’t have the choice to write with Chinese characters.

Broken img As you can imagine, I upgraded to WordPress 2.7 and the upgrade messed with my Chinese characters again. And again, I forget how I fixed the problem…

I thought I better write this post for my own sanity. And hopefully it’ll save me a whole lot of time and tinkering!

bakaAs per usual, I went to WordPress > Support to look up the … erm, I had trouble with logging in because I forgot my password again (but you can still view the topics without logging in). I could also write up another rant about how crappy (navigation-wise) WordPress Support Forum is, but I’ll leave that for another day.

This time around I stumbled across a blog post, by boringest, detailing the steps I should take to fix this problem. um… it didn’t take me long to give up and realise it wasn’t working the way I wanted. I think this post is about changing the admin dashboard into Chinese characters (I’m not sure because I gave up when I couldn’t differentiate between my brother’s database and mine …)

Anyway, the easiest and only effective way which I found time and time again (I did exactly the same thing the other times) is to:

  1. Find your wordpressconfig.php file
  2. Open it up (to edit it)
  3. Find and delete:
    define('DB_CHARSET', 'utf8?);
    define('DB_COLLATE'=, ");
  4. Save

It’s probably one of the most common things that happens, and I don’t understand why WordPress doesn’t just leave those lines out? Then again, everyone probably already has the answer to this problem, and I’m the only one complaining because I’m just too much of a noob…
