We’re dog-sitting Tobi again, and the poor old girl is… well, going a bit senile.
I’m almost positive she’s turning into a cat:
She sleeps all day long
Runs around at night
She won’t listen to you when you call her
She’ll rub up against your leg
Won’t play catch
She looks at you like you’re an idiot
The only way you know she’s around is because you hear her shake her collar
She won’t perform tricks (not anymore)
If you scratch her the right way, she’ll ‘purr’
J and I were supposed to catch up and work out our flight plans to book online, but instead we ended up going to Carousel for the $8 movie promo Hoyts is having. We decided to take up the Hoyts promo to catch Watchmen… it looked cool and potentially mind-blowing. And because we were left so dissatisfied with Watchmen (read below to find out why), we had to go back and watch He’s Just Not That Into You.
Watchmen
We walked into the cinema expecting Watchmen to be something along the lines of the typical superhero kicks bad-ass line. Let’s just say we really should have prepared ourselves better. I don’t have anything against comic adaptations (X-men was pretty entertaining) or comic-like storylines (Killbill and SinCity turned out to be surprisingly good too).
I watched the trailer AFTER watching the movie, seems to me that the trailer can be a bit deceiving? Anyhow, when they say graphic novel, they mean graphic novel. My gripes aren’t against the movie per se, it’s more against the graphic novel which the movie is apparently closely following.
Anyway there were two major issues I had with Watchmen which makes me feel bleh ![]()
**Spoiler Warning**
The first being that the girls in Watchmen wearing anime-like costumes (body hugging, extremely suggestive) are OK with me (I do love my anime), but random nudity and sex scenes just aren’t cool. If they developed the characters more, gave viewers something to relate to, it might not have felt like they threw in the relationship between Laurel and Dan just for the sex (wasn’t she getting it on with Dr. M only a few frames ago!?).
I also didn’t appreciate the way Watchmen made all the female characters whores, and it definitely didn’t improve my opinion when they threw in the kinky twists (I’m guessing Watchmen was created by lots of testosterone). AND if they didn’t show so many frontal shots of ‘Mini Manhattan‘, it might not have made viewers feel so… disturbed…. or distracting! Seriously, it felt like the first half of the movie was blue-penis-free and then suddenly all you see is very naked Dr Manhattan frontals.
It’s something I would expect from a Japanese anime NOT a hollywood film ![]()
The second thing which irked me is more of a personal preference because I like my heroes to stay as heroes. Watchmen are allowed their off-days and hissy fits, but in my world, they shouldn’t be humanised. What I mean by that, is that they killed the heroic characters and turned each and everyone of these Watchmen into pathetic reflections of the faults in humanity.
Where’s the logic in turning a superhero into a wuss? an obsessive freak? an emotionally stunted child?
Is Watchmen trying to suggest that we’re all twisted, even our heroes? Are they trying to rob us of our hope and our naive ideals?
Anyway, Vic at ScreenRant did a detailed review of Watchmen. And after reading the review, I’m positive that I would have enjoyed Watchmen a lot more if I had read the comic…
I do have something good to say about the film though, the graphics are very very impressive! I enjoyed the graphics so much so that I might even watch it again (not in cinema though). On a side note, the only characters I liked were Rorschach and The Comedian.
**End Spoiler Warning**
He’s just not that into you
I’m a huge fan of romantic comedy and He’s Just Not That Into You fits my criteria perfectly. It’s the type of movie which makes you laugh and pulls you right into the plot like you’re right there with the characters. Well, relationships is a topic which we can all relate to after all
Thankfully it wasn’t a let down like P.S I Love You which I didn’t think lived up to it’s expectations (Love Actually). I won’t be going into detail because I would definitely recommend you to go watch He’s Just Not That Into You! It’s most probably one of the best movies I’ll ever watch in 2009… but it’ll come second to Star Trek which will be coming out in May!! Watch the full trailer at the official Star Trek site. I think that I’m going to like this movie no matter if they mess it up , just like Transformers =P
hAHa sorry, we’re not having any CSI (Crime Scene Investigation) tv drama based in Perth. The CSI: Perth that I’m talking about is the Clinical Scientific Innovative… say what? You can click away now before I bore you with my ramblings of dental conventions and what not.
The 33rd Australian Dental Congress and Exhibition in Perth is just around the corner, yaY!? I know that there’s actually not much to get excited over, I mean who wants to sit in on lectures during the weekend?
I don’t mind though, because I know that I have a long way to go before I can confidently say that I’m the best at what I’m doing.
There’s so many articles, research journals and new products, to read up on. Even after you finish one, you realise that there’s a whole stack of other articles contradicting the one you’ve just read….
it’s just never ending!
So anyway, I’ve looked through the Programme quite thoroughly and I have a fair idea of what I’m sitting in on (or in some cases what I’m NOT sitting in on).
I just wish there was a little more detail into the presentations, I’ld rather not listen in on something that bores me to tears… I think I would rather have a monotone lecturer with an interesting topic than an animated lecturer with a boring topic.

I think Sunday is the one I’m most looking forward to, geriatrics and paediatrics… not exactly sure why because those patients aren’t exactly my favourites
I suppose it’s because it’s most rewarding when you finally convince the stubborn 70yo or bratty 6yo to brush their teeth. Obviously I haven’t quite mastered the right way in handling these types of patients ![]()
Well, hopefully the other days won’t drain my brain too much…
I found this song/rap through a post made by 宝茹, and I just couldn’t help but like it. Maybe it’s because it’s been a super long time since I last heard any er hua? Maybe it’s because this is the first I’ve heard a Beijing (er hua) rap song? Or maybe it’s because all I hear in the song is “r..er.. er…er….er..” hAHa
It definitely brings back great memories of my friends and I discussing when you should and should not add an “er (儿)”. We decided in the end that if you want to be a true Beijinger, you should add an “er (儿)” to every possible word.
For example, 我是赖晓音 = wor shir lair xiar yin (just think pirates… arrr!)
And I know I shouldn’t compare, but the rap is almost on the same level as Jay Chou don’t you think?
I mean, it’s as if Beijing rap attempts to mash as many “er (儿)”s into one sentence, and the Taiwanese do a complete 180° by trying to put as few “er (儿)”s into one sentence!
Could it be that maybe their hate for each other has caused their accents to be almost opposite one another?
Either way, I personally find both “er hua” and “slur hua” really annoying if used excessively. Of course, I’ve got a much higher tolerance for the “slur hua” since that’s all I was raised on…
But I did notice that after 6 months in Beijing, I found myself wincing quite a lot. I even told my parents off for teaching me the wrong tones etc!
The mild forms of both “er hua” and “slur hua” are quite nice to listen to though.
Sort of like the icing on a cake – fine without it, but oh so much sweeter with it.
We’ve all heard those phrases: “Never say never”, “Nothing is impossible” etc. And yet the devil at the back of our mind sneaks up on us all and fills us with doubt and fear.
Watch this video and be awestruck by the amazing things people achieve everyday =)
If you ever hear someone say “No way!”, remember this video and reply “Yes way!” because everything is possible.
