The Globe Wine Bar and Restaurant

The Globe RestaurantJ picked The Globe Wine Bar and Restaurant on at the Parmelia Hilton Hotel as our meetup, and typical me did a quick google of it. The Globe didn’t have as many reviews as some of the other restaurants I usually look up (that gives me the impression it’s not as popular), and from the reviews I read it seemed like a love-hate relationship. Despite the hesitation, we still went since it’s in the entertainment book!

The Globe Restaurant Alfresco – Tapas Menu
The Globe Restaurant:<br /> Tapas Menu
Entree: Cardamom spiced duck breast, layered with avocado, roasted peppers, sweet corn & caper salsa | $24.00 and Salmon with seaweed and carrot salad $24.00
The Globe Restaurant:Duck, Salmon Entree

The Duck Breast itself was okay, I couldn’t taste spice and I thought it was a bit dry… but maybe it’s supposed to be like that? The Salmon w/ Seaweed Salad was very refreshing, simple and tasty. I’m personally more inclined to like any kind of salmon, no matter how it’s cooked (or not cooked) so it was a pretty good entree besides the fact that we found a few bones which they didn’t remove… big NO NO!

South west beef fillet, stuffed with foie gras wrapped in prosciutto, field mushroom, ratatouille, vine ripened tomatoes | $44.00
The Globe Restaurant: Beef Fillet

Snapper fillet (forgot the region) topped with wagyu beef and potato scales $42.00
The Globe Restaurant:Snapper Fillet

Best thing about the Snapper was probably the red onion marmalade and wagyu, the worst was the fact that there wasn’t much beef and the presentation just wasn’t appetizing.

Degustation of chocolate desserts to share $30: Cognac and Nougatine Affogato, Warm Chocolate Goujons, Rich Chocolate Fudge Dacquoise, Mini Chocolate Creme Pyramids
The Globe Restaurant: Dugustation of desserts

The Cognac and Nougatine Affogato was by far the favourite! The Goujons were a little lacking in flavour even with the coffee sauce. The Fudge Dacquoise tasted like a cookie… I think I bake better cookies! And the Mini Pyramids were alright… again, nothing special

The service was pretty good, they were very attentive… keep in mind the restaurant was mostly empty with only a handful of patrons, so I can’t say what the service would be like on a busy night though. The main issue would be the fact that they forgot to give us our coats after we paid the bill, the staff seemed to be scarce after payment (think they were packing up?)

The Globe Restaurant: END
At the end of the night I ended up forgetting to use the Entertainment Card (complements of the wine)!! So the bill was on the pricey side $278 … could have saved $40! Taking consideration to everything, Globe Wine Bar and Restaurant is only okay for me 6/10. I’ll have to dine there again to reconsider, and it would definitely be with the Entertainment Card.

Shinhwa on Hiatus as Members Enlist in National Service

The very first time I was introduced to Korean all-male group ‘Shinhwa‘ (신화) was when C invited me over to watch their music videos and live concert. For some reason (maybe it was the weirdness of skin rotting and alien-like creatures?) it was the Wild Eyes music video (below) which left an impression on me.

Not long later, I found myself getting sucked into the whole Shinhwa fan-girl thing (a much much tamer version). I went out and listened to all their albums, as well as watching random videos and performances. In fact, Shinhwa is the whole reason I even went into the whole hanryu (Korean Wave) craze!

Although their first few albums weren’t quite my usual style at the time, there were still enough tracks to lure me in. But it was after they released their 7th album Brand New (when they moved to Good Entertainment) that I stopped following them. I guess after having Shinhwa release 6 albums in 6 years, their 1 year hiatus threw me off their scent.

I always thought the reason for their hiatus was because of the compulsary national service which all South Korean males had to enlist in. It was only when I went through my old korean mp3 collection that I remembered how much I enjoyed listening to and watching Shinhwa perform. So like an ex-fan, I googled ‘Shinhwa’ only to realise that they just celebrated their 10th Anniversary (in 2008), a couple of their members are enlisting for national service (Eric and Dong Wan), and I’ve missed 2 of their albums! (I’ll review their albums on another post)

What I love the most is how Shinhwa has evolved over the years, not only in music style but also in thier image:

From the typical boy-group gravity defying style of the times… scary! omg

To a milder but still peroxide filled style… cuter

To a simple more serious image

To smart and mature… suave!

To what we now know them as

Good Entertainment sure cleaned them up nicely! wink_smilie

Anyway, what I found most interesting is the difference in acomplishments each of the 6 members made individually. The last time I kept tabs on them:

  • Hye Sung formed ‘S‘ with Kangta and Lee Ji Hoon to release Fr.in.Cl shylove (I’ll review later), as well as released his own solo album
  • Min Woo had released 2 solo albums and also starred in a movie
  • Eric was focusing on acting, completing a successful movie and going into more roles
  • Dong Wan and Jun Jin were working on releasing their first solo albums as well as acting in a drama
  • Andy was in a drama…

I’m not surprised with Hye Sung and Min Woo having successful solo singing careers, they were always my favourite singers in Shinhwa. Eric going big inthe film industry was no surprise either since he made such an impressive entry. I was surprised with Dong Wan’s solo album though (I didn’t expect to enjoy it so much), hopefully his second album was just as much of a surprise as the first was. Jun Jin on the other hand, I never quite followed, so I can’t really comment on him. And last of all, Andy has to be the biggest surprise of all! I didn’t realise how good an actor Andy would become, especially when I dismissed his initial performances…

Although Shinhwa’s group activities will stop for now, but members will all be busy with their own solo projects. Kim Dongwan and Junjin will release their 2nd albums respectively, while Lee Minwoo will be holding his solo concert in the US and in Shanghai. Eric will act in a drama before he enlists into the army, Andy will also feature in a drama after he finishes his promotions for his first album, while Shin Hyesung is scheduled to release his 3rd solo album in June [2008].

It’s pretty impressive that Shinhwa has been together for so long, and even more impressive that each of the members have made their individual mark in the entertainment industry. Hopefully they decide to get together again after they each serve their national service!~

Mobile Suit Gundam 00

I’m not a massive Gundam fan, what with all the violence and destruction… I prefer the comedy or fantasy type Anime (I’m a girl after all). But Mobile Suit Gundam 00 was just there for my viewing pleasure, and I remember Gundam SEED wasn’t so bad to watch… even if I have forgotten most of it…

What I like most about Anime is that there are no limits. Anything and everything is possible. Completely up to your imagination. All the characters look fantastic no matter the situation. Even when they have a massive scar on their face like Sergei Smirnov and Graham Acre from Gundam 00.

Mobile Suit Gundam 00 - Celestial Being

The best thing about Gundam 00 is probably the fact that it’s only 2 seasons. Although they could have very easily stretched it out, they kept it short and sweet pleased-gry haHa! I think maybe the huge gap between watching Anime (it must be a few years since my last Anime fix!) has made a difference because I truly enjoyed Gundam 00, and that’s saying something! I find it hard for me to like 2D stuff nowadays!

oH! And I highly recommend the song they play at the end of each Gundam 00 episode in Season 2 called “Trust You” by Yuna Ito~!

So for those of you who don’t know, here’s the story for Gundam 00:

The year is 2307 A.D. Although fossil fuels have been depleted, humanity has obtained a new source of energy to replace them, in the form of a large-scale solar power generation system based on three huge orbital elevators. However, the benefits of this system are available only to a handful of major powers and their allies…..

….In this world of never-ending conflict, a private armed organization appears, dedicated to the elimination of war through armed force. Its name is Celestial Being, and it is in possession of “Gundam” mobile suits. With these Gundams, it begins armed intervention into all acts of war.

gundam00.bandai-ent.com

Yeah it’s another ‘war in space’ series… I guess I couldn’t get enough of BSG? haHa! Well at least we’re not dealing with AI this time around. Again the main issue is something we can relate to off-screen… Depletion of world resources is something which has been on the agenda for a while now, and war over resources is something we see everyday.

hrmm… the more I think about it, the more alike Gundam 00 and BSG are! Both are set in space, both about war and has lots of blood and things blowing up, both involve machines, the Cylons are like the innovators, both revolve around major issues we have today.

Eitherway I’ll be keeping my eye out for the Gundam Movie in 2010~

BattleStar Galactica!

Battlestar Galactica Synopsis

An updating and re-imagining of the classic 1970s sci-fi television show, BATTLESTAR GALACTICA combines elements of STAR TREK, STAR WARS, and THE TERMINATOR. Human beings built the android Cylons to work as servants for them, only to have the robots rebel and disappear into space. A generation later, however, the Cylons returned to destroy their former masters, and succeeded in eliminating the 12 worlds that mankind inhabited.

Luckily, one group of people has managed to escape the genocide, lead by Commander William Adama (Edward James Olmos), on board the massive space ship called Battlestar Galactica. But the struggle isn’t over, as the ruthless Cylons continue to pursue the ship and the last surviving members of the human race. This vision of BATTLESTAR GALACTICA features a darker tone and CGI special effects, and shares with other science fiction sagas a warning about the misuse of advanced technology.

Battlestar Galactica (BSG) has been around for quite a while now, but I never quite picked it up again after their hiatus during season 2… P convinced me it was worth finishing, but there I was wrapping up Gossip Girl, Heroes and The Sarah Connor Chronicles (TSCC)…. I wasn’t sure I would have time to finish BSG between them all.

Battlestar Galactica

Anyway, never say never! It actually didn’t take too long to finish up BSG (all 4 seasons including webisodes, and movies) because there were so many familiar episodes that I just couldn’t quite remember (I’m convinced I watched more after season 2). It was a little tricky to get back into the story, especially when my mind was still fresh with TSCC (The Sarah Connor Chronicles), I had to remember that Cylons are not Terminators!

CylonsThere’s no way to compare BSG to TSCC because BSG doesn’t focus on ‘Judgment Day‘, the death of human-kind. Well it does have an element of human extinction, but it has a more religious theme and makes the Cylons out to be another species rather than just machines.

The constant war in space, running from Cylons, and finding ‘Earth‘ thing wasn’t always so exciting, but I really enjoyed how the whole series turned out. I especially liked how it involves issues which are very real off-screen, BSG makes me wonder if maybe we will repeat ‘history’. It seems to me that the Cylons had it right when they said: “All of this has happened before, and it will happen again… again… again…“… Humans have a love for conflict and drama, it’s as if we go out and find something if there isn’t any…

Battlestar Galactica: Caprica

So it’ll be interesting to watch the spin-off, Caprica . I hear it’ll focus on how the 12 colonies are living in the times of boom and abundance, they’re on such a high that they’re getting out of control… sounds awfully familiar?

P.S. Wiki has a very condense synopsis-review for those who are curious, but be warned as it contains spoilers!
