Crazy Week …
Packing for Siem Reap - Dental Donations
many thanks to A (OralB) and S (DHAA) for their significant contributions!!

Mum (and I) tried to pack this way and that way 找一个办法带那么多牙膏和牙刷去 Siem Reap Angkor Hospital for Children. (Ref: Pre-travel Research)

At the end of the day, it looks like I’ll have to hand carry all my clothes because the bag is a bit over 15kg and AirAsia wants me to pay for an upgrade to 25kg?!! Geeze… I only wanted a bit of leeway incase I was overweight, not an upgrade. If they took body mass into consideration, I should be given at least 10kgs extra! Anyway,  I’m going to assume J isn’t utilising the 15kg and bum off her excess weight~

Other than packing there’s also been a lot of movement.

Hauling all the furniture off the carpet meant I had to box all my belongings and sleep Japanese style…

You don’t realise the number of possessions you have until you have to pack it all away! At least now I know I can survive on minimal number of clothing.

The repainting of the walls sure makes a room look new….

But it’s the re-carpeting that makes the room feel new!

Anyway, I suppose all the stress prior to departure will make me enjoy the trip even more friends

小娘惹 (The Little Nyonya)

Mum suckered me into watching another drama called The Little Nyonya (小娘惹)!! 这次爸爸和哥哥也跟着看giggle

I wasn’t meant to start another drama until I watched Avatar: The Last Airbender which R gave me, True Blood (s1) that I got off J, and lets not think about all the Taiwan and Korean Drama my cousin gave me!!... But… but I hardly ever watch Singaporean Drama (我好像只看过一套)and the reference to Malaysian-Singaporean (or should I say overseas Chinese?) history aroused my curiosity.

The storyline spans over 70 years from the 1930s to the present day, involving four generations of a big family…The deaf and mute Juxiang (Jeanette Aw) is a mistress in a large Peranakan family, who flees from home to marry a Japanese photographer named Yamamoto Yousuke (Dai Yang Tian). After their deaths during World War II, their beautiful daughter Yueniang (also Jeanette Aw) stays with her grandmother (Xiang Yun), who teaches her the fine Peranakan art of cooking and sewing. Yueniang’s beauty and culinary skills soon attract many rich suitors, but she only has eyes for Chen Xi (Qi Yuwu), a penniless driver…

*Peranakan (or “Baba-Nyonya”) refers to the descendents of early Chinese immigrants in Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia, where “Baba” means men and “Nyonya” women.

Although at it’s core is a love story (I’m such a sucker for love stories) what I enjoyed the most is the insight into the Peranakan culture, it really helps  me appreciate what I have and be grateful that mum doesn’t nag me any more than she does when it comes to traditions, greetings, face, dining and social etiquitte etc. It also helps me put into perspective where my grandparents are coming from when they say or do certain things – it’s amazing how much can change in just a couple of generations.

The other thing which got me hooked onto the show was the constant cooking! It just makes me drool at all the yummy Malaysian food that just don’t quite taste the same here down under.

*Spoiler Warning*

Just like any other movie or drama series, there’s also a few quirks which The Little Nyonya (小娘惹) has… Besides the unrealistic outcomes (ie. Yueniang talking her way out of everything) and faults in acting (which weren’t actually too bad), there’s only a couple of major qualms I have with the drama.

Who did she marry?

This one really bugs me because the show heavily suggests that Yueniang and Paul get married, even saying how her child became a lawyer (like Paul). But if this is the case, her granddaughter (Angela) must be really slow and really thick for even thinking that she is biologically the granddaughter of Yueniang and Paul? Just show me a Eurasian who looks completely Asian and I’ll take this remark back.

If I swear celibacy, will I be Super Granny?

TaoJie at 90+yrs wasn’t senile or bed-ridden, and she was still strong enough to serve (and out-live) her mistress and mistress’ daughter all these years. That’s impressive! Not only can you be Super Granny, you also don’t have to deal with all the headaches and heartaches that life throws in your face or have the life of diaper changer/chauffeur/maid etc.

Were/Are people really like that?

The character of Yueniang gets on my nerves because she is always on the moral high ground. Even after her biological family disowns her, treats her worse than a servant, physically and verbally abuse her, kills her Mama, locks her up, attempt to kill her several times, sold her Nya to cruel man, constantly slanders her Mama, Nya and herself etc etc (the list can go on).

It’s especially difficult when the ‘bad characters’ are worse than bad, they’re just pure evil. I excused the Huang kids and Robert Zhang as mentally unstable – the Huangs because they’re inbred and Robert because he has Charlie as a father. Still, it seemed like everyone else was just pure corrupt… What a twisted and scary world we live in!

*End Spoiler Warning*

Like many of the drama series I’ve seen, there’s many discrepencies in The Little Nyonya, but I have to say that it’s a lot better than TSCC (boy were there lots of dodgy loopholes in that series!). I’m quite surprised at how good the show turned out despite my low expectation

Can’t Change WordPress Theme?

Broken imgThere was a bit of an issue when I was trying to change my WordPress theme, the preview was just blank. I thought maybe the fault was with the theme? Maybe WordPress preview doesn’t show the theme but it’ll still work? I thought wrong.

UnsureThinking it was a mistake on my part, I re-uploaded all the relevant files only to see no changes. It was when I tried to change to some of my other WordPress themes, that I realised the problem was bigger than I thought…

Thankfully it didn’t take that long to solve, all I did was upgrade fantastico.

  1. Login to cpanel
  2. Under “Software/Services“, click on Fantastico
  3. Under “WordPress” find the relevant location and click on the Upgrade Link

Pre-Travel Research

As many of my friends know, I like to research. It sounds harmless enough, researching is handy to make sure you know exactly what you’re talking about, or eating, or seeing, or getting into etc. The trouble comes when you research excessively to the point you think the stuff is rubbish and write your own account… I’m just a tad like that, not that far gone yet.

It wasn’t always like this, but the 6 years in tertiary education rewired my brain in it’s quest for knowledge (and I suspect a touch of PD too). Prior to this I was quite content with the answer of “Just Because”.

Anyway, this is my round-about excuse for my lack of updates as of late. I keep getting lost in my Pre-Travel Research for Cambodia and Thailand.

After you decide on a destination (which takes some research in itself), there’s a whole list of things to look into for each location (less countries = less research):

  • Accommodation – location, hotel vs hostel, reviews
  • Activities – type (leisure or extreme), location, cost, reviews
  • Dates – availability
  • Government Warnings – smartraveller
  • Insurance – budget vs comprehensive
  • Itineraries – self plan vs tour
  • Payment Options – Cash, Credit, Direct, Deposit, T/T
  • Registration - smartraveller
  • Safety Precautions – reviews, smartraveller
  • Sites to See – wikitravel, Canby (Cambodia)
  • Vaccinations - Chikungunya fever, Dengue fever, Malaria, Japanese Encephalitis, Hepatitis, Cholera, AIDS/HIV, Giardia, Salmonella, Typhoid…

To be quite honest I haven’t looked up much for Phuket because it seems to be well travelled. Siem Reap on the other hand has lots for me to look into… And now that it’s near my departure date, I’ve found myself some extra things to organise.

Cambodia itself has an extremely harsh history, and even now it is still struggling to form solid foundations for their most basic of needs.

I stumbled across the Angkor Hospital for Children, established by a NGO called Friends Without a Border, either through a review site or travel log… As a health professional, Angkor Hospital for Children really hits close to home because I know first hand how ignorance to the most basic preventive measures (washing hands, brushing teeth! etc) can affect someone’s life.

Anyhow, I’ve somehow turned my planned trip to see the Angkor ruins into a more meaningful experience. It’s a bit last minute but I’ve scrounged up some toothbrushes, toothpaste and my clinics old instruments for donation.

Now let’s just hope I get everything done on time with no hiccups!

Metro Radio Andy Lau, Richie Jen & Andy Hui Diamond Megastar Promotion

WwoOoo! JT was asking about Asian concerts not long ago (since Jay Chou was in Australia?), and look at what I found at YesAsia!:

Metro Radio Andy Lau, Richie Jen & Andy Hui Diamond Megastar concert

Andy Lau, Andy Hui and Richie Jen! I haven’t stayed in touch with Asian celebrities but Andy Lau is old, and Richie has been around for a while too… not too sure who Andy Hui is, although I’m sure my little cousins can easily fill me in.

On a side note, I always thought Richie’s surname was Ren not Jen…. the wonders of translation? Or is it the Cantonese romanisation?

YesAsia

Now this would be even better if they included Air Tickets!

Malaysian Airlines have flights Perth to HK for about AUD$500 one way – not bad, but the return flight bites you in the ass for close to AUD$3000 (they “sold out” of their budget/economy seats)
