Missing Beijing

Events No Comments »

Watching the Olympics and listening to all this talk about Beijing makes me really miss that place! All I hear and see is Beijing this and Beijing that and I hate that I’m not there to explore all the really cool things that they did just for the Olympics =( I even missed out on trying out the new Beijing International Airport by a week!!

I can’t help but tune myself into the Olympic events everyday, especially now that we can watch it on CCTV! The problem with Channel 7 is that they give a lot of air time to swimming and other popular Australian sports, concentrating on the Australian athletes because that’s what our Australian market demands of them.

But this time around, CCTV gives me the choice of what to watch. I don’t think I’ve ever watched softball, equestrian, weight-lifting, judo, badminton, 乒乓比赛 什么的 during the Olympics before…

虽然我可以看别的运动,我还喜欢看游泳比赛,diving (especially synchronized diving), gymnastics… mainly the sports that involves a lot of gravity defying and/or contortion of the body O_o; The least favourite for me has to be the equestrian competition and the white water rafting.

On a side note, I’m starting to get really frustrated with always hearing 中国加油,《insert athlete name》加油,《insert team name》加油,《insert country name》加油. My goodness, how many times do they have to say “Jia You!” at least mix it up a bit… isn’t there something else in Chinese besides 加油??!

Beijing Olympics 2008

I thought I would use the Beijing Olympic Games as a good excuse for me to blog a little in Chinese…

BUT my vocab prevents me from writing about just how crazily fantastic the Olympic opening ceremony was! Only in China can you get a HUGE mass of people performing in sync with 99% accuracy. I enjoyed playing ’spot the mistakes’ during the performances just because it would be unfair if there weren’t any mistakes at the Beijing Olympics… it’ll make the Australian Sydney Olympics look bad!

The Beijing Olympics though, there are some performances which I doubt I’ll easily forget. I especially loved the performance with the mass of drums which lit up in sync and the moving columns which was so in sync that I almost believed it was computerised.

我最不喜欢的是 the order of which each country entered the stadium! 因为澳大利亚第一字是 ‘a’ 应该在前面的,可是这次澳大利亚差不多是最后出的!!My dad had to explain to me that countries were entering in order of number of strokes in their Chinese character… STROKES?! Poor Australia has way too many =(

Anyways, like I said great ceremony. Even the lighting of the Olympic flame was cool! Although, it would have been cooler if there were no mistakes…

I’ve been meaning to update but I haven’t had time to type anything up! These mid semesters and assignments are really time consuming (when you actually plan on putting effort into them)! Anyhow, I’ll update soon, I still have to post about how cool Harbin is =)

China beds cause Insomia

Ahh, I didn’t get a good nights rest at all =( Not the best thing since I had classes 8:30am til 4pm today. I didn’t actually wake up until just before lunch, and after lunch I just felt like sleeping again!

with classmates @ Canteen

I was just lying in the bed tossing and turning for god knows how long last night! I’m just not used to sleeping on these hard beds, it feels like I’m just lying on wood covered with cloth. I can’t sleep properly on my back because it feels weird and there’s no give in the so-called mattress to support my lower back.
So I turn on the side which is how I usually sleep…. But I can’t fall asleep because the bed is too hard and I’ve only got the one pillow =( Sleeping on my tummy doesn’t work on a normal bed and still doesn’t work on hard beds!!!

Ah… 我很想睡觉 …how good would it be to get into a nice SOFT bed full of pillows!!

And I swear, it’s so dusty EveRyWheRe you go!! This room of mine is the dustiest room I’ve ever been in! I’ve wiped down my desk a few times already and the dust just comes back within an hour! There’s even dustballs on the floor! I dropped a lid and it rolled under the bed once…oh my goodness, the thickness of the dust under there is amazing! The Fuyuans definitely don’t clean under there.

oH well, lots of studying to do now!! Especially because I plan not to study tomorrow at all!

The Great Wall really is great! All you have to do is ignore all the tourists, ignore all the walking and dodgy stairs, ignore the smelly toilets, ignore the haze, ignore the many many stalls ripping off innocent tourists…

Climbing the Great Wall

We set off at 8am and arrived at 八达岭长城around 9:30am. We bought some supplies (snacks and water) and headed to the entrance. There were a crazy number of tourists including the 12 coaches from 语言大学 (BLCU)! After walking along the wall in the sea of people for about 5-10 minutes, we decided to head in the other direction where it seemed to have a lot less people.

And so the journey begins…

Climbing the Great Wall

It seemed as if the further up we went, the better the view became (and this wasn’t just because there was a lot less people either!).There’s really not much else to say because you have to be there yourself to know what I’m talking about, and the photos aren’t even comparable to what you can experience…

Climbing the Great Wall

We had to head back to the coach by 2:15pm so it didn’t really give us much time. But I’ll definitely be going back to climb the 长城 again!!

PS. Beijing coffee sucks ass! If you want great coffee, go to Starbucks even if it does cost 31RMB for a medium mocha frappachino! But hey, it’s all good after conversion ^_-
