BattleStar Galactica!

Battlestar Galactica Synopsis

An updating and re-imagining of the classic 1970s sci-fi television show, BATTLESTAR GALACTICA combines elements of STAR TREK, STAR WARS, and THE TERMINATOR. Human beings built the android Cylons to work as servants for them, only to have the robots rebel and disappear into space. A generation later, however, the Cylons returned to destroy their former masters, and succeeded in eliminating the 12 worlds that mankind inhabited.

Luckily, one group of people has managed to escape the genocide, lead by Commander William Adama (Edward James Olmos), on board the massive space ship called Battlestar Galactica. But the struggle isn’t over, as the ruthless Cylons continue to pursue the ship and the last surviving members of the human race. This vision of BATTLESTAR GALACTICA features a darker tone and CGI special effects, and shares with other science fiction sagas a warning about the misuse of advanced technology.

Battlestar Galactica (BSG) has been around for quite a while now, but I never quite picked it up again after their hiatus during season 2… P convinced me it was worth finishing, but there I was wrapping up Gossip Girl, Heroes and The Sarah Connor Chronicles (TSCC)…. I wasn’t sure I would have time to finish BSG between them all.

Battlestar Galactica

Anyway, never say never! It actually didn’t take too long to finish up BSG (all 4 seasons including webisodes, and movies) because there were so many familiar episodes that I just couldn’t quite remember (I’m convinced I watched more after season 2). It was a little tricky to get back into the story, especially when my mind was still fresh with TSCC (The Sarah Connor Chronicles), I had to remember that Cylons are not Terminators!

CylonsThere’s no way to compare BSG to TSCC because BSG doesn’t focus on ‘Judgment Day‘, the death of human-kind. Well it does have an element of human extinction, but it has a more religious theme and makes the Cylons out to be another species rather than just machines.

The constant war in space, running from Cylons, and finding ‘Earth‘ thing wasn’t always so exciting, but I really enjoyed how the whole series turned out. I especially liked how it involves issues which are very real off-screen, BSG makes me wonder if maybe we will repeat ‘history’. It seems to me that the Cylons had it right when they said: “All of this has happened before, and it will happen again… again… again…“… Humans have a love for conflict and drama, it’s as if we go out and find something if there isn’t any…

Battlestar Galactica: Caprica

So it’ll be interesting to watch the spin-off, Caprica . I hear it’ll focus on how the 12 colonies are living in the times of boom and abundance, they’re on such a high that they’re getting out of control… sounds awfully familiar?

P.S. Wiki has a very condense synopsis-review for those who are curious, but be warned as it contains spoilers!

Twilight + New Moon + Eclipse + Breaking Dawn

TwilightYeah I know Twilight is old news, but C‘s post reminded me that I wanted to write about it, plus I’ve finally gotten around to watching the Twilight movie!

‘Why the Twilight movie‘ you ask? nerdWell I considered my addiction to all types of series (be it movie, tv shows, books or comics) and I figured it was best I take it easy and just watch the movie first. There was a chance it wouldn’t be worth reading despite the ranting and raving I’ve been hearing about, the very same ranting and raving which happened with LOTR (Lord of the Rings) and Harry Potter.

Okay sure, LOTR and Harry Potter weren’t completely horrid, but at the end of the day I don’t think it would be something I would re-read since there’s a movie version (even then I doubt I would re-watch them either).

So that brings us back to the Twilight movie that’s taken me so many months to watch. The crap reviews it received didn’t help speed things up, and I probably wouldn’t have actually watched it yet if I didn’t leech it off P. Anyway, despite the unrealistic acting and tacky sfx, it’s got me started with the book series by Stephenie Meyer! There’s just something about blood sucking vampires which appeal to me. And yes I’m a fan of Anne Rice too!

*Spoiler Alert*
reading beyond this point is at your own peril
you have been warned

Stephenie Meyer CD Pack

kawaiiI love the way Stephenie Meyer and Anne Rice gives their vampires life, there’s just so much depth in the characters which makes you want to learn everything you can about them. But what makes Twilight appealing to me is the focus on the human-vampire relationship (very Romeo and Juliet), and throwing in werewolves doesn’t hurt either!

Before I knew what happened, I had consumed the whole Twilight Series within a week! That’s including the partial draft of Midnight Sun, and the chapters/sections which were edited out of the story, which btw you can find at stepheniemeyer.com (pdf)

New MoonAlthough I’m a bit curious about how New Moon (the movie) will turn out, I’m not looking forward to it at all. thumbs downNot only do I think the Twilight movie completely trashed the book, but I also didn’t particularly enjoy New Moon itself. I admit the progression in New Moon is necessary in the whole Twilight Series, but reading New Moon was just too angsty for my tastes.

What I really enjoyed, and would recommend, is the extras Stephenie Meyer put up on her website (New Moon Extras pdf’s). The edited sections for New Moon were quite good too, I thought The Scholarship would have been an interesting addition… I’m not sure if it would have made it seem like Edward was just torturing poor Bella though.

EclipseAnyway, the next book really made up for the angsty mood of New Moon. Although Eclipse isn’t as good as Twilight, I found it a lot better than New Moon. The best thing about Eclipse is that you learn about how the other Cullens changed, and I really enjoyed how everything pieced together. Reading Eclipse was like putting together a jigsaw puzzle, we’re given little fragments of information and everything just started to fit into place.

But I have to admit, by the time I got to Eclipse it felt a bit like I was reading just to get to the end. I thought it was stupid how easily Bella turned her back on Jacob when you spent the whole of New Moon building up a tight bond between the two. suicideAnd seriously, how can Bella forgive and forget everything that happened to her when Edward left? She was catatonic, delusional and suicidal! And when Mr Love-of-her-life returns, everything is back to normal to the point of marriage?? wth? Bella has got to be demented or something.

Breaking Dawn (The Twilight Saga Book #4)yeahrightBreaking Dawn was harder to enjoy because of how completely unrealistic everything turned out. It sort of made the whole Twilight Series seem more like a fairytale where nothing bad could ever happen to the main characters… The bad guys never even had a chance, I don’t know why they were even involved!

I’m also a bit peeved with the honeymoon in the beginning of Breaking Dawn… not that I was expecting this to turn into a graphic novel (this is a teen novel after all),contract but it felt like watching a movie where the scenes were just completely cut out. They didn’t edit it, or even make an attempt at smoothing out the scene so that it could flow into the next. Couldn’t they have just put in a kiss? a hug? some kind of physical contact? geez!

kawaiiThe best thing I liked about Breaking Dawn is Renesmee, the idea of a hybrid human-vampire. Very cool. But besides that, nothing else really jumps out at me. thumbs downI hate that Bella is the oh-so-powerful-no-need-to-go-through-blood-lust character, Meyer should have just made her some other breed of vampire or something! Again, very very unrealistic, especially considering Jasper still has problems with it.

Okay, I think I’ve ranted for long enough. Minus the inconsistencies, the Twilight Series is something that I just might read again… well maybe just the first book. At the end of the day I still love vampires, and I wouldn’t mind reading more from the world of Twilight.

P.S. If you want to get your hands on the Twilight Series, you can get some decent secondhand books at AbeBooks.com for a few USD~!

Weekend movie nights

whistleJ and I were supposed to catch up and work out our flight plans to book online, but instead we ended up going to Carousel for the $8 movie promo Hoyts is having. We decided to take up the Hoyts promo to catch Watchmenit looked cool and potentially mind-blowing. And because we were left so dissatisfied with Watchmen (read below to find out why), we had to go back and watch He’s Just Not That Into You.

Watchmen

We walked into the cinema expecting Watchmen to be something along the lines of the typical superhero kicks bad-ass line. Let’s just say we really should have prepared ourselves better. I don’t have anything against comic adaptations (X-men was pretty entertaining) or comic-like storylines (Killbill and SinCity turned out to be surprisingly good too).

I watched the trailer AFTER watching the movie, seems to me that the trailer can be a bit deceiving? Anyhow, when they say graphic novel, they mean graphic novel. My gripes aren’t against the movie per se, it’s more against the graphic novel which the movie is apparently closely following.

Anyway there were two major issues I had with Watchmen which makes me feel bleh yuck

**Spoiler Warning**

The first being that the girls in Watchmen wearing anime-like costumes (body hugging, extremely suggestive) are OK with me (I do love my anime), but random nudity and sex scenes just aren’t cool. If they developed the characters more, gave viewers something to relate to, it might not have felt like they threw in the relationship between Laurel and Dan just for the sex (wasn’t she getting it on with Dr. M only a few frames ago!?).

I also didn’t appreciate the way Watchmen made all the female characters whores, and it definitely didn’t improve my opinion when they threw in the kinky twists (I’m guessing Watchmen was created by lots of testosterone). AND if they didn’t show so many frontal shots of ‘Mini Manhattan‘, it might not have made viewers feel so… disturbed…. or distracting! Seriously, it felt like the first half of the movie was blue-penis-free and then suddenly all you see is very naked Dr Manhattan frontals.

It’s something I would expect from a Japanese anime NOT a hollywood film yuck

The second thing which irked me is more of a personal preference because I like my heroes to stay as heroes. Watchmen are allowed their off-days and hissy fits, but in my world, they shouldn’t be humanised. What I mean by that, is that they killed the heroic characters and turned each and everyone of these Watchmen into pathetic reflections of the faults in humanity.

Where’s the logic in turning a superhero into a wuss? an obsessive freak? an emotionally stunted child?

Is Watchmen trying to suggest that we’re all twisted, even our heroes? Are they trying to rob us of our hope and our naive ideals?

Anyway, Vic at ScreenRant did a detailed review of Watchmen. And after reading the review, I’m positive that I would have enjoyed Watchmen a lot more if I had read the comic…

I do have something good to say about the film though, the graphics are very very impressive! I enjoyed the graphics so much so that I might even watch it again (not in cinema though). On a side note, the only characters I liked were Rorschach and The Comedian.

**End Spoiler Warning**

He’s just not that into you

I’m a huge fan of romantic comedy and He’s Just Not That Into You fits my criteria perfectly. It’s the type of movie which makes you laugh and pulls you right into the plot like you’re right there with the characters. Well, relationships is a topic which we can all relate to after all shylove

Thankfully it wasn’t a let down like P.S I Love You which I didn’t think lived up to it’s expectations (Love Actually). I won’t be going into detail because I would definitely recommend you to go watch He’s Just Not That Into You! It’s most probably one of the best movies I’ll ever watch in 2009… but it’ll come second to Star Trek which will be coming out in May!! Watch the full trailer at the official Star Trek site. I think that I’m going to like this movie no matter if they mess it up , just like Transformers =P

Star Trek XI Trailer!

It’s been a long time since I’ve watched any Star Trek show or movie, and now they have another movie coming out?? YAY!!

This is the only Star Trek XI <full> Trailer I could find so watch this quick, I’m not sure if they’ll take it off YouTube… [Edit: video updated 7/3/09]

And did you guys notice something?

Syler from Heroes is Spock (or his evil twin)! =D

Anyways, I’m looking forward to this (it’s about time I got my sci-fi fix), plus the trailer doesn’t look completely dull… Although, I know the trailer usually shows the most exciting/interesting scenes from the movie. So there is a potential that the movie is a complete flop since the trailer only seemed to have a little bit of action, drama, romance… I would have liked a bit of humour too, but it didn’t seem to have any. I guess it might not be nearly as funny as the Transformers Movie, but only time will tell.

Watching the Star Trek trailer reminded me that I haven’t been downloading/watching BattleStar Galactica for a long long time!! I’m soooo behind now, but I think I’ll try and get some episodes in during Christmas and New Year break =P

Anyone have episodes they can send/lend me??

葡萄园之恋 aka Vineyard Man

The Vineyard Man Synopsis

Bright, energetic, and just a bit spoiled, aspiring fashion designer Lee Ji Hyun (Yoon Eun Hye) is the picture of a typical city girl. She drinks expresso, takes dance lessons, dresses impeccably, and knows the value of money. After she gets fired from her job, Ji Hyun’s grandfather asks her to go work at his vineyard.

Moving to the countryside is the last thing Ji Hyun wants to do – until she realizes how much the land will be worth when it gets redeveloped. In exchange for a year at the vineyard, she can get the money to start her own fashion line.

Life in the countryside is unbearable for this clueless city girl, especially when she has to work with a hillbilly like Kang Taek Gi (Oh Man Seok). But as time passes, Ji Hyun finds herself falling in love with both the vineyard and the man in it.

I’ve just finished yet another Korean drama called The Vineyard Man (葡萄园之恋 pu tao yuan zi lian) which (again) stars Yoon Eun Hye, she also starred in Coffee Prince and Goong (Princess Hours). After 16 episodes I finally learned to love the male lead, Taek Gi, although it was after a bad first impression (especially after I watched Goong). It was a little like Endless Love, I grew to love the characters by the end of the series instead of an instant connection.

One thing I really love about The Vineyard Man is one of their theme songs played throughout the show called 想靠近你 (xiang kao jin ni). It’s track number 5 on The Vineyard Man OST, da ga ga go ship uh by Kim Jung Eun.

Play the youtube video below to have a listen and watch the ending of The Vineyard Man.

*Spoiler warning*

The Vineyard Man is a very sweet romantic comedy which I would recommend for those looking for some light entertainment, my mum loved so I’m sure yours will to giggle. Yoon Eun Hye and Oh Man Suk are great performers who bring the characters to life, and they’re definitely entertaining to watch. Unfortunately though, The Vineyard Man is very similar to other Korean dramas out there, there’s some pretty heavy crying scenes…

End of Romantic Princess

princess hoursJust recently, I found 公主小妹 (Romantic Princess) on CETV1 as well as Princess Hours =) I previously watched a couple of episodes of Princess Hours, but it was the female lead, Yoon Eun Hye, which made me want to watch it again. She’s the same girl from Coffee Prince and there’s just something about her which makes me like her.

Anyway, I just wanted to rant about 公主小妹(Romantic Princess) because I actually watched the ending of this very short Taiwan drama and was left extremely disappointed. Of all the different types of endings they could have had, the last episode of 公主小妹 was definitely one of the worst ones I’ve seen!

*Spoiler Alert*

Romantic PrincessInstead of leaving me smiling and feeling happy, crying my eyes out or even satisfied, 公主小妹 (Romantic Princess) left me with thoughts of how stupid the characters were. I mean, the characters were all making it seem like Xiao Mai leaving for 3years was a life or death event, and that it would be a tragedy if Jin didn’t see her before she left. She’s an heiress for goodness sake! How can she not be able to afford a plane ticket within those 3years?

I don’t think the director or whoever was in charge realised that the last impression is just as important as the first impression.

Romantic PrincessIf they repeat Romantic Princess 公主小妹 on another channel, I’m going to attempt to watch those episodes I’ve missed. I’m hoping that maybe, just maybe, those missed episodes make a difference to how I view the ending….

- – - – - -

P.S. I’m pretty disappointed at the lack of English subtitles for Romantic Princess found at YesAsia!! They’ve got Japanese subtitles, as well as both traditional and simplified Chinese but NO English???

P.P.S. I’m starting to notice a strong trend with these drama’s that I enjoy so much. They all seem to be based on a manga / manhwa / comic! No wonder I’m such a sucker for these dramas… I can still think of a few mangas which I’ve read that I would like to see in Live Action, I have a feeling I won’t have to wait too long at this rate =P
