Family Reunion

Beihai

My parents left to join in my grandfathers 80th birthday celebrations in KL already. In the short time they were in 北京 Beijing, we had the chance to go to 北海 Beihai, 西单 Xidan, 秀水街Xiushuijie, walk through 景山公园 Jingshan Park, drive around 故宫 Gugong,天安门 Tiananmen, 后海 Houhai, some 胡同 Hutongs, eat some yummy 北京烤鸭 Beijing Duck and saw my cutie nephew!!!!!

It’s hard when one person wants to do the cultural site seeing thing and the other wants to just go shopping….
Forbidden City

Either way, that hotel bed was lovely to sleep on and the showerhead was to die for! I wasn’t too fond with the slow drainage and windowless curtains though. I stupidly walked from the new train station to their hotel on the first day thinking it wouldn’t be that far. Yes well, it wasn’t that far on the map…

The new subway Line 5 was pretty spiffy, their trains were upgraded (lights to show the progress, extra bars for people to hold on to, AC etc) and they also put in glass doors on the platforms which I thought was stupid because the train doesn’t actually line it’s doors with the platform doors when it stops. Anyways, they still have a long way to go before it can even be compared to HK.

So I gave my family a quick call on Saturday to say “Hi!” and “Happy Birthday” to my Grandfather. But it was so noisy I doubt they even heard me… I wish I had been there to see everyone and eat the wonderful banquet I’m sure they had =( Now I’ll just have to make do with the photos and videos…

Yesterday was apparently the Vietnamese Women’s Day! It’s the day where the guys will treat the girls like a queen by buying them flowers or a gift and doing the chores for them. We ended up having a yummy steamboat on the kitchen floor in dorm building 4 with a bunch of Vietnamese people. You know, I wouldn’t be surprised if I’ve met more Vietnamese people than local Chinese!

PS. I bought myself a couple of fishies (黑黑 and 金金)! I decided it was just too cruel to kill a turtle.

Happy National Day!~

Horrayy the week is over and now it’s time for China’s National Day/Week celebrations!!! =D

This is the first time I’ve had a 7 day week of classes in my life time and I’m hoping it’ll be the last!! I don’t even know why I’m complaining…I only do about 20hrs in a 4day week here at BLCU whereas some other people do up to 30hours! 20hrs is heaps compared to the 14-15hr weeks I’m used to in Perth!

October is going to be such a busy month! From the 1st to the 7th is the week off for BLCU (Beijing Language and Culture Uni) Students and I’m still not exactly sure what I’ll be doing during this time. I’m most likely going to be shopping and seeing some sites, but some of this depends on how the weather holds up here. Then in a couple of weeks my parents are coming to visit me, a couple of friends might be coming to Beijing, and other relatives dropping by Beijing too!!

The weather here has been getting cooler now, which sucks because I wanted to experience as many sunny days as I can before I freeze my ass off. Which reminds me, those fuyuan’s in our dorm building took away our a/c remote!! Boo! I can’t even regulate my room temperature anymore.

Now, let’s get down to business.

Most people come to Beijing and go looking for the Silk Market (Silk Street) which is a touristy multi-storey building full of stalls selling whatever you want. The stall owners know phrases in multiple languages such as “hey pretty lady” “come look” “I give you a good deal” etc. in Mandarin, English and Russian.

Because it’s such a touristy place to go to (they even have parking space for the tourist coaches), the stall owners can be quite aggressive and they always start at OUTRAGEOUS prices. Expect 500% increase!

I went to the Silk Market once and I wouldn’t go back there to buy anything, I’ld rather go shopping at the 五道口服争市场 near our campus on 学院路. The stall owners there are much nicer and most of them are quite reasonable because there are a lot of students around the area.

So anyway, today I made my way to 西单. I was looking for the street market and instead I found this unknown alleyway markets which led me to a multi-storey building packed with everything you would want. It’s much bigger than the Silk Market and packed full of locals…and I’ve always figured, if you see locals around buying stuff it means that the prices are fairly reasonable.

After splurging most of the money I had on me, I got lost trying to get out of the building (I swear they purposely don’t have any escalators going down!). The train ride home was interesting, I had to literally throw myself into the crowd whilst keeping a tight hold on all my bags. And of course, I forgot to get off at my stop to change lines and so had to squish into another train.

Nothing brings a country together better than these packed train rides which force us to get up close and personal.

China beds cause Insomia

Ahh, I didn’t get a good nights rest at all =( Not the best thing since I had classes 8:30am til 4pm today. 上课的时候,我差不多睡着了!真得不好意思! I didn’t actually wake up until just before lunch, and after lunch I just felt like sleeping again!

跟同学在食堂一起吃。
with classmates @ Canteen

I was just lying in the bed tossing and turning for god knows how long last night! I’m just not used to sleeping on these hard beds, it feels like I’m just lying on wood covered with cloth. I can’t sleep properly on my back because it feels weird and there’s no give in the so-called mattress to support my lower back.

So I turn on the side which is how I usually sleep…. But I can’t fall asleep because the bed is too hard and I’ve only got the one pillow =( Sleeping on my tummy doesn’t work on a normal bed and still doesn’t work on hard beds!!!

Ah… 我很想睡觉 …how good would it be to get into a nice SOFT bed full of pillows!!

And I swear, it’s so dusty EveRyWheRe you go!! This room of mine is the dustiest room I’ve ever been in! I’ve wiped down my desk a few times already and the dust just comes back within an hour! There’s even dustballs on the floor! I dropped a lid and it rolled under the bed once…oh my goodness, the thickness of the dust under there is amazing! The Fuyuans definitely don’t clean under there.

oH well, lots of studying to do now!! Especially because I plan not to study tomorrow at all!

八达岭长城

The Great Wall really is great! All you have to do is ignore all the tourists, ignore all the walking and dodgy stairs, ignore the smelly toilets, ignore the haze, ignore the many many stalls ripping off innocent tourists… 八达岭长城真的极好的!

走走,走到一只不停Climbing the Great Wall

We set off at 8am and arrived at 八达岭长城 (Badaling) around 9:30am. We bought some supplies (snacks and water) and headed to the entrance. There were a crazy number of tourists including the 12 coaches from 语言大学 (BLCU)! After walking along the wall in the sea of people for about 5-10 minutes, we decided to head in the other direction where it seemed to have a lot less people.

And so the journey begins…

我们跟北京语学生去八达岭,到哪里我么都分开自己走Climbing the Great Wall
另外一边有很多旅游团,所以我们回转走另一边
Climbing the Great Wall

我们爬越高就见到越少人风景越漂亮!It seemed as if the further up we went, the better the view became (and this wasn’t just because there was a lot less people either!). There’s really not much else to say because you have to be there yourself to know what I’m talking about, and the photos aren’t even comparable to what you can experience…

累死了!!来到北京我有那么多运动机会~
Climbing the Great Wall

We had to head back to the coach by 2:15pm so it didn’t really give us much time. But I’ll definitely be going back to climb the 长城 again!!

PS. Beijing coffee sucks ass! If you want great coffee, go to Starbucks even if it does cost 31RMB for a medium mocha frappachino! But hey, it’s all good after conversion ^_-

Hello Beijing!

Beijing flight & weather

Sunrise from the plane

Okay, so here I am in 北京 Beijing, China. I flew in on Sunday and it was so very tiring! I met a really nice couple on the plane who were from Melbourne going to Beijing for a tour with the rest of their family. They definitely made my trip a little better, especially when I had trouble reaching for my bags in the overhead compartments! If only I wasn’t so short…. speaking of my height, yet another YOUNGER cousin of mine has overshot me! *cry*

Cousins in KL

Landed in Beijing

Anyways, the first day here was really hectic going around looking for some place to stay and just getting to know the area. Even though I made several attempts to book a dorm room, the fuyuans wanted me to TT over a deposit before hand. But I didn’t trust this method since I read that someone had trouble with receiving a receipt and securing the room …

Exploring BLCU

I’m so glad my cousins’ boyfriend helped me out (she would have seen to me though, if she were in Beijing at the time), I would have been completely lost had he not been there! He even help point out some sites, bars, clubs around 五道口 Wudaokou area ^_-

In the quest to find accommodation, I found myself walking around ALOT. When my cousins’ bf said that you get used to the walking, I thought he was kidding.

BUT HE WASN’T.

I stopped walking excessively when I got my license, these leg muscles aren’t up to the usual standards!! But all that walking we did really helped me get a better orientation of the 五道口 Wudaokou area and BLCU campus =)

Beijing September Weather

北京 is still in Summer mode, so this means the pollution is not your best friend. When the plane was landing, it descended into a thick haze and I was a bit suprised at how bad the pollution is. I’ve also worked out why China people like spitting! All this pollution gets to my throat and it’s been irritated ever since I’ve been here!!!
campus 1
It also doesn’t help that we’re walking everywhere… breathing in all the fumes at the same time. The walking isn’t that bad, I’ve always said I needed more excercise right? hAHa Well I’ve been definitely getting my fair share of exercise now! My aim is to become a pro in walking around with heels on like the local girls ^_- (It’s a lot harder than you think because some roads are unsealed, potholes everywhere, the sidewalks are shonky etc)

BLCU accomodation

[Click for another more detailed post on BLCU Dorms]

My first impression of BLCU campus was that it was a MESS. There didn’t seem to be much logic in what they did… they have the phone numbers to the other dorm buildings but would refuse to call them on our behalf. They expected us to go to each of the dorms and ask if they had available rooms! And each of the dorms seem to all work independently from each other so it all depends on whether the 服员 fuyuans are nice or not.

The dorm rooms are alright, not something to be too excited about especially when I’ve got about 30 dead mozzies splattered on my wall (plus a few live ones). What I was a bit annoyed with was that I can’t use the Aussie 2 pronged plugs. These Chinese people want you to have 3 prongs or you can’t use it at all!! NO LOGIC I swear!

My room is on the 3rd floor and is at the very end of the hall near the fire exit. The good thing about that is that I’ll be the first to escape if there’s a need to, and it’s fairly quiet down the end because you don’t have people walking past your room all the time. Our window overlooks the main road however, and that isn’t cool because you can hear the traffic quite clearly at night.

Roommate

The 服员 fuyuans told me that I’ld be sharing a room with a Korean girl which was totally fine with me since I figured I could ask her to intro me to some cool kdrama or gasoos. But rumour has it that BLCU – Wudaokou area has a massive number of Koreans and they all stick together and snub us random internationals =( So I was a bit worried I’ld have some bitchy Korean chic as my roommate.

BLCU Dorm room

When my roomie finally arrived on Sunday, I didn’t even meet her until 9ish that night because I was out the whole day. As it turns out, the 服员 fuyuans like to talk crap because my roomie is Vietnamese. She seems nice enough though, we have our moments where we completely don’t understand each other because my standard of Chinese is crap. Yeah, our common language is Mandarin!

BLCU Dorm Room

She totally owns me in Chinese! Although sometimes I find that she pronounces some words like a Viet. But this is to be expected because she actually teaches Chinese in Vietnam!! We just found out that she’s an ox too so that makes her exactly 12 years my senior. I bet mum’s happy with this arrangement, I doubt I’ll be having any parties in this room LoL!

Oh yeah, I need to find some clothes to wear pronto! I brought along too many winter clothes and I left a few things in KL because I was boarderline overweight =( The clothes that I’ve seen here aren’t exactly great… they seem to like big baggy aka oversized clothes.

So that’s all for now, I know I haven’t taken many photos at all since my arrival. I’ve just been waaayyyyyyy too tired or busy organising everything and I just can’t be bothered right now.

And on the side note, I can’t access Xanga!

再见!
