Weekend movie nights

whistleJ and I were supposed to catch up and work out our flight plans to book online, but instead we ended up going to Carousel for the $8 movie promo Hoyts is having. We decided to take up the Hoyts promo to catch Watchmenit looked cool and potentially mind-blowing. And because we were left so dissatisfied with Watchmen (read below to find out why), we had to go back and watch He’s Just Not That Into You.

Watchmen

We walked into the cinema expecting Watchmen to be something along the lines of the typical superhero kicks bad-ass line. Let’s just say we really should have prepared ourselves better. I don’t have anything against comic adaptations (X-men was pretty entertaining) or comic-like storylines (Killbill and SinCity turned out to be surprisingly good too).

I watched the trailer AFTER watching the movie, seems to me that the trailer can be a bit deceiving? Anyhow, when they say graphic novel, they mean graphic novel. My gripes aren’t against the movie per se, it’s more against the graphic novel which the movie is apparently closely following.

Anyway there were two major issues I had with Watchmen which makes me feel bleh yuck

**Spoiler Warning**

The first being that the girls in Watchmen wearing anime-like costumes (body hugging, extremely suggestive) are OK with me (I do love my anime), but random nudity and sex scenes just aren’t cool. If they developed the characters more, gave viewers something to relate to, it might not have felt like they threw in the relationship between Laurel and Dan just for the sex (wasn’t she getting it on with Dr. M only a few frames ago!?).

I also didn’t appreciate the way Watchmen made all the female characters whores, and it definitely didn’t improve my opinion when they threw in the kinky twists (I’m guessing Watchmen was created by lots of testosterone). AND if they didn’t show so many frontal shots of ‘Mini Manhattan‘, it might not have made viewers feel so… disturbed…. or distracting! Seriously, it felt like the first half of the movie was blue-penis-free and then suddenly all you see is very naked Dr Manhattan frontals.

It’s something I would expect from a Japanese anime NOT a hollywood film yuck

The second thing which irked me is more of a personal preference because I like my heroes to stay as heroes. Watchmen are allowed their off-days and hissy fits, but in my world, they shouldn’t be humanised. What I mean by that, is that they killed the heroic characters and turned each and everyone of these Watchmen into pathetic reflections of the faults in humanity.

Where’s the logic in turning a superhero into a wuss? an obsessive freak? an emotionally stunted child?

Is Watchmen trying to suggest that we’re all twisted, even our heroes? Are they trying to rob us of our hope and our naive ideals?

Anyway, Vic at ScreenRant did a detailed review of Watchmen. And after reading the review, I’m positive that I would have enjoyed Watchmen a lot more if I had read the comic…

I do have something good to say about the film though, the graphics are very very impressive! I enjoyed the graphics so much so that I might even watch it again (not in cinema though). On a side note, the only characters I liked were Rorschach and The Comedian.

**End Spoiler Warning**

He’s just not that into you

I’m a huge fan of romantic comedy and He’s Just Not That Into You fits my criteria perfectly. It’s the type of movie which makes you laugh and pulls you right into the plot like you’re right there with the characters. Well, relationships is a topic which we can all relate to after all shylove

Thankfully it wasn’t a let down like P.S I Love You which I didn’t think lived up to it’s expectations (Love Actually). I won’t be going into detail because I would definitely recommend you to go watch He’s Just Not That Into You! It’s most probably one of the best movies I’ll ever watch in 2009… but it’ll come second to Star Trek which will be coming out in May!! Watch the full trailer at the official Star Trek site. I think that I’m going to like this movie no matter if they mess it up , just like Transformers =P

Australia Hits the Big Screen

The new movie Australia starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman by Baz Luhrman has Tourism Australia hot on it’s heels. It’s good to see that Tourism Australia saw this opportunity to leverage off the Hollywood film, just to get an awareness out there in the ‘big bad world’ would make a difference.

I personally find the TV commercials which they came up with quite depressing, Click to view Billabong and Click to view Boab

It’s such a contrast with the traditional Australian advertising campaign which is usually full of blue skies and beaches like the following:

I can’t really bring myself to like the new angle because it makes Australia look like any other over worked, doped up on anti-depressant country (even if it is true).

Why did it have to be so different? Why couldn’t they just follow Telstra and Qantus in their advertising creative?

I suppose they have a huge gap to make up for when their “Where the bloody hell are you?” campaign became famous for its failure. It’s so famous that it’s been banned from some countries and there’s so many spoofs around you might miss it! I’ve even found this great video where the guys at Chaser’s War on Everything come up with alternate slogans and test it on actual tourists =D

Star Trek XI Trailer!

It’s been a long time since I’ve watched any Star Trek show or movie, and now they have another movie coming out?? YAY!!

This is the only Star Trek XI <full> Trailer I could find so watch this quick, I’m not sure if they’ll take it off YouTube… [Edit: video updated 7/3/09]

And did you guys notice something?

Syler from Heroes is Spock (or his evil twin)! =D

Anyways, I’m looking forward to this (it’s about time I got my sci-fi fix), plus the trailer doesn’t look completely dull… Although, I know the trailer usually shows the most exciting/interesting scenes from the movie. So there is a potential that the movie is a complete flop since the trailer only seemed to have a little bit of action, drama, romance… I would have liked a bit of humour too, but it didn’t seem to have any. I guess it might not be nearly as funny as the Transformers Movie, but only time will tell.

Watching the Star Trek trailer reminded me that I haven’t been downloading/watching BattleStar Galactica for a long long time!! I’m soooo behind now, but I think I’ll try and get some episodes in during Christmas and New Year break =P

Anyone have episodes they can send/lend me??

Movie Reviews

TRANSFORMERS Synopsis

Based on the Hasbro toy line that initially captivated kids in the 1980s, director Michael Bay’s TRANSFORMERS finds two warring bands of shape-shifting alien robots renewing their intergalactic conflict on Earth. While the Decepticons, followers of the malevolent Megatron (voiced by Hugo Weaving), strive to take over the planet, the Autobots, led by the valiant Optimus Prime (voiced by Peter Cullen), are intent on protecting humanity. When young Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) discovers that his new car is really the Autobot Bumblebee (voiced by Mark Ryan), it sets the stage for a massive giant-robot showdown. (imdb 8.1/10)

I’ve been looking forward to the Transformers movie for a long long time now, ever since I saw the trailer on C‘s blog last year. Because I only heard good news about the movie, I went in expecting people to have over rated it. I mean, there’s no way EVERYONE enjoyed it! But even with the front row seats, I was happily suprised at how great the movie is! I would strongly recommend people go out and watch Transformers.

Pros: Action. There’s a Plot. Autobots. Humour. Cars. Cast
Cons: Blur fight scenes. Bad attempt at romance. Jazz was ripped into two!

BLADES OF GLORY Synopsis

Rival skaters Chazz Michael Michaels (Ferrell) and Jimmy MacElroy (Heder) begrudgingly set out to attempt a historical comeback in the pair-skating program after being banned in the men’s figure skating category after an unsportsmanlike scuffle. MacElroy’s former coach (Craig T. Nelson) provides them with the tough-love coaching they so desperately need. Despite their absurdity, the duo aren’t previous award winners for nothing, and their combined talent threatens the position of fellow American skating champions. (imdb 7/10)

Blades Of Glory wasn’t too bad. Definately not something I would watch again though. It’s a bit like Borat (though Borat was much better), funny at the time but at the end of the movie I feel like I’ve wasted 1.5 hours of my life…

Pros: Attempted Humour
Cons: Two guys ice skating. Costume. Stupid Plot

KNOCKED UP Synopsis

Young, bright, and talented, Alison (Heigl) has everything going for her. After being promoted to an on-camera role at E! Television, Alison goes out to celebrate with her older sister, Debbie (Leslie Mann). Not long into the evening Debbie is called home to her kids, leaving Alison in the eager company of charming slacker Ben (Rogen). In the dark of the nightclub and in the ensuing drunk hours, Ben seems like a great guy. But in the sober light of day, Alison quickly discovers the man in her bed is nothing more than an overgrown child with no job, no money, and the social habits of a teenager. Brushing him off politely as a one-time affair, Alison goes on with her life, until two months later she realizes that the unthinkable has happened. (imdb 8.1/10)

As a sucker for any kind of ‘romantic comedy’/'feel good’ movie I can’t hate Knocked Up. I would have been able to enjoy the movie more if there was maybe a bit more character development, and I couldn’t help but feel disgusted at the behaviour of Ben Stone &Co. Knocked Up deals with very real issues and unfortunately very real situations… how often have I seen girls getting ‘Knocked Up‘? Well at least Alison is a step ahead because she isn’t completely brainless. I would definitely prefer watching Knocked Up over Blades Of Glory.

Pros: Izzie from Greys Anatomy! Search for a Gynecologist giggle
Cons: Seth Rogen. Boring Plot. Pointless side story. Ben Stone, his friends & their antics.
